I I. "SOLUS SPIRITUS" and Supernatural Power
Before a short exposition on Acts 1:8 about the Power of the Holy Spirit, I would like to say a few things.
The Supernatural Power of the Holy Spirit is still working in our days, so I believe in anointment, healing, miracles, revival and even in some kind of signs and wonders.
But, don't jump conclusions before I tell you firstly in what I don't believe and secondly in What I Believe:
A. Firstly, let me say in what I don't believe
1. I don't believe in a manifestation that goes beyond what is written.
I don't believe in any manifestation of the Supernatural Power of the Holy Spirit that goes beyond the teaching of the Bible.
1 Corinthians 4:6 "Do not go beyond what is written"
Someone said "the Bible without the Spirit is dead and has no power, but the Spirit without the Bible is dangerous".
So, do not go beyond what is written, because it is dangerous!
You can find at the bottom of this post some warnings about teachings and experiences in Churches that goes beyond what is written.
2. I don't believe we have the same Power than Jesus and His Apostles.
I don't believe that we have the same Supernatural Power than Jesus and the Apostles to do the kind of miracles, healing, signs and wonders they did.
Hebrews 2:4 "God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?"
Clarke's Commentary on Hebrews 2:4
God also bearing them witness - He did not leave the confirmation of these great truths to the testimony of men; he bore his own testimony to them by signs, wonders, various miracles, and distributions of the Holy Ghost, Πνευματος 'Αγιου μερισμοις. And all these were proved to come from himself; for no man could do those miracles at his own pleasure, but the power to work them was given according to God's own will; or rather, God himself wrought them, in order to accredit the ministry of his servants.
With signs and wonders. - These words are usually connected in the New Testament. The word rendered "signs" - σημεῖον sēmeion - means any miraculous event that is suited to show that what had been predicted by a prophet would certainly take place; see Matthew 12:38; compare note on Isaiah 7:11. A "wonder" - τέρας teras - denotes a portent, or prodigy - something that is suited to excite wonder or amazement - and hence, a miracle. The words together refer to the various miracles which were performed by the Lord Jesus and his apostles, designed to confirm the truth of the Christian religion.
According to his will - As he chose. He acted as a Sovereign in this. He gave them where He pleased, and imparted them in such measure as He chose. The sense of this whole passage is, "The gospel has been promulgated to man in a solemn manner. It was first published by the Lord of Glory Himself. It was confirmed by the most impressive and solemn miracles. It is undoubtedly a revelation from heaven; was given in more solemn circumstances than the Law of Moses, and its threatenings are more to be dreaded than those of the Law. Beware, therefore, how you trifle with it, or disregard it. It cannot be neglected with safety; its neglect or rejection must be attended with condemnation."
B. Secondly, let me say in what I believe
1. I Believe the Spirit releases Power through the preaching of the Word.
Romans 1:16 "I am not ashamed of - the preaching of the - Gospel, because it is the Power for the salvation to everyone who believes".
The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit in the ministry.
See Ephesians 6:17 and Hebrews 4:12
Revival, anointment or any other supernatural operation of the Holy Spirit produced under the preaching of God's Word is always a better and safer option.
A powerful preaching of the Word of God can release anointment, miracles, revival and even some kind of signs and wonders that are apportioned by God for our times.
But those miraculous operations are not forcefully like the same operations that God have apportioned for the times of Jesus, the Messiah and the Son of God, and for the times of the Apostles of Christ - the Eye Witnesses Scriptures of the Death and the Resurrection of Christ.
2. I Believe that in revival the supernatural element is uppermost
I believe that in revival and other miraculous operations the supernatural element is uppermost. We must be clear in our minds that revival and what we call a evangelistic crusade are very different things. In revival the supernatural element is uppermost, and the human elements and activities much less important.
We could say the same for other miraculous operations of the Holy Spirit, where the supernatural element is uppermost.
The Holy Spirit can sometimes act directly and independently of God's Word, but never goes beyond the teaching of the Word of God.
In His Sovereignty God can pours out His Spirit bringing people back to His Word and to live holy lives before God and sacrifice their lives to go and proclaim the Gospel to all creation.
Sometimes that happens as a result of the faithfully prayer of the believers, because Revival can come from the input of believers that living faithfully for God, praying and preaching the Word and living holly lives moves God's hand to bring revival to the Church and to the world.
But revival can also come from God, without any human intervention, when the Church is dead or is asleep living in sin and away from God, and He decides to revive or to awake up the Church by the Power of the Holy Spirit. In these cases, the supernatural element is uppermost.
We could say the same for healing and anointment and for some kind of miracles, signs and wonders, where the supernatural element is uppermost.
We must also say that even in forgiveness, regeneration and sanctification there is a supernatural element involved in these operations, otherwise it would not be possible for people to know such experiences.
I I I. My understanding of Acts 1:8 about the Power of the Holy Spirit
Acts 1:8 "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth".
We can divide this text in three sections:
A. ""But you will receive".
B. "power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;"
C. "and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth".
Let us give a look into these three sections:
A. "But you will receive".
Jews Acts 2 the Samaritans Acts 8 and the Gentiles Acts 10 accomplishing the promise about His coming.
These three chapters are the only ones in Acts that speak about tongues, because tongues in Acts are a sign of the accomplishment of the descent of the Holy Spirit promised in the Old Testament.
We also read in the book of Acts about others signs and wonders that accompanied the mission of the Apostles in order to accredit their ministry.
So, I am saying that signs, miracles, wonders that were performed by the Lord Jesus and the ministry of the Apostles, were giving by God to show that they were sent by Him and were designed to confirm the truth of their message, and the signs that accompanied the descent of the Holy Spirit in Acts were to show that the Prophecies of the Old Testament about the descent of the Holy Spirit have been accomplished and a new dispensation began.
Note: If you want to know my complete opinion about tongues in Acts and also in 1 Corinthians 12, you must access my Portuguese blog and read my post about tongues. You can also see my post about the Gifts of the Spirit in my Portuguese blog.
But, you realize that I have not said much about POWER in this first section, because Power comes now in our second section.
B. " power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;"
The Supernatural Power of the Holy Spirit is still for the Church of our days.
The Holy Spirit still wants to release His power, firstly through the powerful preaching of God's Word and the powerful preaching of the Gospel, secondly in revival and other miraculous operations where the supernatural element can be uppermost.
C. " and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth".
The Power of the Holy Spirit was not given to keep us happy and well or to be used only for out reach around our "Judea" or "Samaria", but rather to challenge us to leave our comfort zone and be witnesses to the ends of the earth.
Christians quite often are not ready to obey the Great Commission commandment because they don' want to be confronted with the hardships they will find if they go out of their "comfort zone"!
But, we can not spread the Gospel in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth, neglecting the biblical truth that in revival and other miraculous operations the supernatural element is uppermost.
Even in salvation, forgiveness, regeneration and sanctification there is an involvement of the Supernatural Power of the Holy Spirit, otherwise it wouldn't be possible for these operations to take place in the lives of the believers.
There is no salvation without a Supernatural intervention of God in people's lives!
Many preachers believe that in transcultural evangelism the Holy Spirit can use more frequently His Supernatural Power in order to protect God's servants from danger and to break human and diabolic obstacles in order to open the way for the preaching and acceptance of the Gospel.
